Broadening the Experience
Keynote: Mark Samels
Mark Samels, Executive Producer of American Experience, the longest-running and most watched history series on television, will describe how the PBS series taps academic expertise at universities to add authenticity to its historical documentaries and how it reaches out to various communities beyond broadcast through outreach initiatives and emerging digital media platforms. Several case studies will be featured, including a major upcoming mini-series on Native American history, We Shall Remain.
About the speaker: Under his leadership at WGBH, the PBS Boston station, American Experience documentaries have been honored with nearly every industry award, including the Peabody Award, Prime time Emmys, the duPont-Columbia Journalism Award, Writers Guild awards, Oscar nominations, Audience and Grand Jury awards at the Sundance Film Festival, and the Erik Barnouw Award from the Organization of American Historians.

Regional Award Presentations of the C. Peter Magrath, W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement AwardHear the five regional award winners present their work, which won them regional recognition. The award recognizes the work of former National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) President Magrath promoting the Engagement Function as an integral part of the role and responsibilities of public universities and their faculty. Based on the presentations conducted here, NASULGC will present the inaugural award of $20,000 to one of these individuals at their annual conference in November.

Bio Trek: A Journey into the Living Sciences Discover
The central part of the UW-Madison campus and get a feel for science as exploring the unknown. Visit the sites of several historical milestones, including one of the cradles of discovery of vitamins and the place where Joshua Lederberg conducted his Nobel Prize-winning research discovering sex in bacteria. At the Biotechnology Center you’ll tour the DNA Synthesis Lab, the DNA Sequencing Lab, and the Gene Expression Center, and get a glimpse of the lab that first discovered how to grow embryonic stem cells. In the Outreach Teaching Lab you’ll explore a series of hands-on activities built around parables and paradoxes designed to cultivate the science savvy of learners of all ages, including extracting DNA from wheat germ, analyzing a sample of DNA from salmon, and building a human DNA model. You’ll finish with a discussion of the ways engaging learners in science can show people how they have a stake in their land-grant university, and that their land-grant university has a stake in the well-being of their communities.
South Madison Community
South Madison Community is home to a culturally and economically diverse population with a rich history. Visit this neighborhood to learn about the educational outreach efforts going on in the community. And, learn how a coalition of organizations and institutions in South Madison is building capacity to develop solutions for the issues in the community, with an emphasis on planning, funding and organizational issues. One of the featured programs is the University of Wisconsin-Extension Dane County Financial Education Center that is providing a range of educational programs and services to increase the financial literacy skills of residents.The Pyle Center: Providing Access to Distance Learning
The Pyle Center ,UW-Extension’s flagship distance education and conference center, offers learners direct access to university resources wherever they live or work and extends the Wisconsin Idea to global audiences.The conference center features a variety of meetings rooms, the latest distance education and audio-visual systems, fine cuisine and special amenities. The Center’s meeting rooms include 15 conference classrooms, 10 specially-designed distance education rooms, an auditorium and a computer lab – all complemented by comfortable break-out spaces for informal networking.

The Way of the Warrior
Presenter: Patty Loew Associate Professor, Life Sciences
Communication, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Starting her professional life as a successful broadcast journalist, Loew is now an associate professor in the department of life sciences communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also a producer for WHA-TV, a PBS station in Madison, Wis. As part of work with PBS, Loew just completed production on a new documentary, Way of the Warrior, that examines the role and cultural meaning of Native American military service in the 20th Century. In this session, Loew, who uses a curriculum of written and oral testimonies from tribal elders and leaders in her work, will talk about the inception of the project and discuss the production process. She says, through both careers, her professional pursuits and personal growth have often been intertwined.
