Title: Promoting University Outreach and Research
Speakers: Chris Andersen, Karen Bruns, and a panel of university administrators who support outreach/research collaborations

Though outreach and research are core missions of higher education, their efforts have not always been coordinated productively. Which factors in communities and higher education have promoted a closer integration of these two missions? How can these two missions capitalize on the synergy of collaborating across differing organizational structures? This session will focus on building partnerships between these two missions and the innovative programs that can result, including Ohio State's Project GRO, which assists with development of outreach plans for research proposals and facilitates collaborations with outreach providers. The session will describe the conceptualization of several innovative programs and the process of building collaborative partnerships.

Capstone:
Ron Cervero
Why Outreach Matters: Mission, Money, and Strategy

About the Speaker: Ron Cervero is a professor in the Department of Adult Education at the University of Georgia, Athens. He is a consulting editor for numerous educational journals, including Adult Basic Education, Studies in Continuing Education, and the Journal of Transformative Education. He has a master’s degree in social sciences and a Ph.D. in adult education from the University of Chicago.

As you look at the long historical sweep of the past 150 years, Outreach has been central to the expansion of access to higher education. Outreach programs have made a difference in people's lives and have helped to shape society's economic, cultural, and political systems. At the same time, this educational agenda must be negotiated within the political-economic context of our institutional settings. Given the current political economy of higher education that requires institutions to be more entrepreneurial, Outreach is more important than ever to this larger organizational strategy of survival and growth. As leaders of Outreach, we need to articulate our mission about access and showcase our entrepreneurial skills to position ourselves as key actors in this larger organization strategy.
